Here is a continuation of the history of guest speakers that are the foremost authorities in the industry:

07/17/99 JIM WOLF, Director of Science Outreach at CLU "Creatures of the Reef Aquarium" An Interactive Presentation on the Biology of the Creatures of the Coral Reef Aquarium

Jim has degrees in both environmental and marine biology. Jim Wolf is an educator both in the conventional sense as well as commercial, having published instructional videos for marine aquariums though his company Aquatic Realm Productions. Jim is an active speaker and author on marine aquariums having most recently talked at MACNA X.

"The Cultured Aquarium - Culturing Marine Fishes and Soft Corals at Home"

Joyce Wilkerson rears clownfishes and has had articles published in Freshwater and Marine Aquarium (FAMA) magazine and in Aquarium Fish magazine as well as in club newsletters from Vancouver to Florida. She is section leader of the Breeding and Fry Care section of FISHNET and Director of Operations for Breeder's Registry (an organization of marine larval rearing and coral propagating hobbyists).

03/20/99 BART SHEPHERD, Aquatic Biologist, Steinhart Aquarium. "Marine Displays at Steinhart Aquarium and Captive Propagation of Organisms"

Bart will focus on the tropical marine displays here at Steinhart, especially those including ongoing captive propagation research. He is currently working with Fungia sp. stony corals and he knows of no other person or institution that is having success reproducing them at any scale.

"Captive Comparisons to Natural Systems"


Jonathan has his B.S. degree in Marine Sciences and Molecular Biology and an M.S. degree in Invertebrate Zoology. He has written various articles in FAMA, June 1998, July 1988 Fish Tails. He is the director of America On Line's Fish and Marine Life Forum. He contributes to various club columns and newsletters. He was a guest speaker at the recent MACNA X Conference.

"Lighting the Reef Tank: Recent developments and implications"
Richard has been an active researcher, lecturer and author and has published articles in AQUARIUM FISH magazine and FRESHWATER and MARINE AQUARIUM magazine. Richard is well respected in our hobby with research of lighting levels found on the reef and in the aquarium. He compares these findings with his testing of various types of aquarium bulbs and their aging life cycles as well as what levels of lighting we need for our corals and fish.

01/17/98 "Tank Maintenance" (It has to be done but no one likes to do it!) A roundtable discussion on tank maintenance by seasoned aquarists who discuss what they think is important and the best ways of accomplishing them.

11/22/97 "Manufacturing Techniques for Acrylic Tanks" by Howard Wong of Bio Reef Tanks of San Francisco. Howard speaks about how acrylic aquariums are manufactured, what makes a quality and durable aquarium and offers some tips on how to care for our tanks.

09/27/97 "Aquarium Controllers-the computer revolution comes to aquariums" DON SMITH (hobbyist/user) and CURT PANSAGRAU of Neptune Systems discuss and demonstrate how aquarium controllers can give you new insight into your aquariums heartbeat and warn of problems before your aquarium inhabitants find out.

05/17/97 "Round Table Discussion on Marine Aquariums" Panel of long time marine aquarists (over 75 years of combined experience) will field questions and discuss the do's and don'ts of setting up and operating marine aquariums.

03/15/97 "Marine Life of the Monterey Bay Area, Emphasizing Adaptations for Survival" by BILL FINSTAD. Mr. Finstad holds a Masters Degree in Marine Biology specializing in shark behavior. His thesis work covered circadian rhythms in sharks. He helped produce several television documentaries on shark behavior and has taught the subject for many years as a college professor.

01/18/97 "Aquarium Water Chemistry for freshwater, marine and garden ponds" by JOHN KUHNS - President of AquaScience Research Group, Inc. - chemist and aquatic researcher. Water chemistry was presented in an easily understood format. Audience participation encouraged a complete understanding of the topic. Mr. Kuhns developed the formulas for NovAqua and AmQuel plus over 100 other products related to freshwater & marine fish health and aquatic environment control

11/16/96 "New and Exciting Methods that Computer Techniques bring to the Aquarium Hobby" by JERRY BORRELL- President of Sumeria, Inc. Sumeria was the first company to produce CD ROM titles on marine life and ocean environments. With seven volumes, including video on over 1,000 species of fish, it is the most comprehensive series of its kind on the world's ocean systems.

09/21/96 "Marine Angelfish" by SHIRLEY FARRELL. A discussion of the techniques for successfully maintaining marine angelfish. Including the nutritional requirements, water quality and parameters, identification, and other special requirements.
