Here is a history of club events that feature hot topics and the foremost authorities in the industry:
~~~~~~~~~~~~ Meeting Notes For the October 26, 2002 Workshop with David Cripe on "Coral Propagation"
"Frag Frenzy Day"
Man it was a great day for frags. Despite the Giants playing in the World Series at the same time we had a good turnout and better yet the frag turnout was tremendous. There were 2 tables full of various frags and even colonies of zoanthids and LPS. Not to be left out there were lots of SPS as well as other goodies such as sargassum and pom pom xenia.
Talk about frags from Monterey Bay Aquarium - some of them were literally large colonies from the hobbyist perspective - I kid you not. Apparently when public aquariums trade with one another they don't trade what we would consider frags but colonies! For example, Montipora frags can be the size of a large bowl or Sinularia are as big as 1 foot high colony.
Donations: We also received another very generous donation of a $100 gift certificate for the raffle from Eddie at Tropical Paradise - Thanks Eddie. Aquarium Concepts also donated a $25 gift certificate and a calendar. We also received in person several bottles of Instant Algae from Randy Reed of Reed Mariculture. As for all those that brought in the various frags - a big thank you including David Cripe himself, Curt Pansegrau, Roger & Marian Hofer, Bill & Alice Smith, Rex Niedermeyer and whomever else I've missed. There were also a LPS and zoanthids colonies from Brent who had to take his tank down.
~~~~~~~~~ July 2002 Club Meeting Featured Speaker: Rob Toonen on "Clear as Mud: An Introduction to Deep Sandbeds"
Rob's BIO: I am a Canadian, born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta. If I had to pigeon-hole myself into a specific field, I would say that I am an Invertebrate Larval Biologist, but my interests are fairly diverse, and professional and personal research has been rather eclectic to say the least.
I have written numerous articles for online organizations including Reefs.Org and G.A.R.F., and frequent a variety of the marine aquarium list-servers and web boards online where I go by the handle of Biogeek. I have also written feature articles for several of the hobby magazines, including Aquarium.Net, Freshwater and Marine Aquarium Magazine, Marine Fish and Reef USA Annual, Practical Fishkeeping, and Tropical Fish Hobbyist. I currently write a monthly question and answer column (Invert Insights) for Tropical Fish Hobbyist, and alternate with Eric Borneman for the Invertebrate Non-column in Advanced Aquarist's Online magazine.
~~~~~~~~~ May 2002 Club Meeting Featured Speaker: Wayne Shang on "Small Polyps Stony Corals and Marine Fish"
Wayne's BIO: Wayne Shang has kept freshwater fish since childhood, and began keeping marine aquaria in the early 80's. He is currently focusing on Small Polyp Stony corals and Tridacna clams. He maintains a 650-gallon reef and a 300-gallon marine fish-only aquarium at home.
In May 18th 2002 meeting, Wayne is going to talk about how to successfully maintain Small Polyp Stony Corals and to keep Marine Fish in home aquarium.
Come to join the Seabay club meeting on May 18 and spend a Saturday evening with Wayne to learn all the secret of his success or visit his web site at www.underseadiscovery.net just to get acquainted.
~~~~~~~~~ November 2001 Club Meeting Coral Care: Adaptation, Placement and Compatibility Group opportunity to share experiences and ask questions related to the care and maintenance of corals. Take 25 marine aquarists with an average of 5 years keeping corals and you have over 100 years of total experience to draw on to help make you more successful. Do not miss this opportunity! ~~~~~~~~~ September

DAVID CRIPE- Monterey
Bay Aquarium David has been directly responsible for the coral propagation in preparation for the upcoming exhibit "SplashZone." This exhibit has not yet been opened to the public, but David will go into great detail and will hopefully bring some slides to show and will answer all of your questions on what it takes to put this latest project together. Dave's Bio: I am a senior aquarist at Monterey Bay Aquarium. I have worked at MBA for three and a half years, during that time, I have worked with everything from jellies to sharks. Two of the areas that I have focused on have been larval culture and coral propagation. I am currently heading up the larval culture program at MBA and have worked with over twenty different species of fishes and invertebrates. For the last two years, I have been working on coral propagation in preparation for a new temporary exhibit called SplashZone. The focus of SplashZone
is comparing and contrasting tropical coral reefs with temperate rocky
shores. While the target audience is kids, adults will be able to learn
a lot and enjoy the exhibit. The tropical side of the exhibition includes
a 1000+ gallon reef exhibit, 1000+ gallon shark exhibit, 900 gallon moray
eel exhibit, 300 gallon giant clam exhibit and numerous other smaller
exhibits. While I was involved in many of the exhibits, the reef and giant
clam exhibit were the two primary exhibits that I designed and set up.
The reef exhibit is designed to be a cross-section of a Indo-Pacific reef
from the fore reef through the reef crest and into the lagoon. The giant
clam exhibit is a focus exhibit with several species of clams along with
a few corals and a few species of fish. I will talk about the design and
set up of these two exhibits and touch on some of the other exhibits and
cool animals that can now be found in SplashZone at Monterey Bay Aquarium.

REX NIEDERMEYER Abstract: Ever stare at your monthly power bill and wonder how you could reduce it or worry about whether you have too many pieces of aquarium equipment hooked up to your outlet and fear you might blow your fuse/breaker? This talk will demonstrate how you can estimate what your power utilization is for your present system(s) or a possible new one and what the actual operating costs are/will be. We will talk about ways to possibly minimize your power usage (and thus your power bill) while making sure you are hooking everything up safely. We will also demonstrate how to measure power usage in equipment as well as show proper safety procedures for hooking them up. This is a topic every aquarist can benefit from whether they are saltwater or freshwater enthusiasts so invite a freshwater friend ~~~~~~~~~ 01/15/2000
