Meeting Notes For

the October 26, 2002

Workshop with David Cripe on

"Coral Propagation"

"Frag Frenzy Day"

Man it was a great day for frags. Despite the Giants playing in the World Series at the same time we had a good turnout and better yet the frag turnout was tremendous. There were 2 tables full of various frags and even colonies of zoanthids and LPS. Not to be left out there were lots of SPS as well as other goodies such as sargassum and pom pom xenia.

Talk about frags from Monterey Bay Aquarium - some of them were literally large colonies from the hobbyist perspective - I kid you not. Apparently when public aquariums trade with one another they don't trade what we would consider frags but colonies! For example, Montipora frags can be the size of a large bowl or Sinularia are as big as 1 foot high colony.

Donations: We also received another very generous donation of a $100 gift certificate for the raffle from Eddie at Tropical Paradise - Thanks Eddie. Aquarium Concepts also donated a $25 gift certificate and a calendar. We also received in person several bottles of Instant Algae from Randy Reed of Reed Mariculture. As for all those that brought in the various frags - a big thank you including David Cripe himself, Curt Pansegrau, Roger & Marian Hofer, Bill & Alice Smith, Rex Niedermeyer and whomever else I've missed. There were also a LPS and zoanthids colonies from Brent who had to take his tank down.

July 2002 Club Meeting

Featured Speaker: Rob Toonen on

"Clear as Mud: An Introduction to Deep Sandbeds"

Rob's BIO: I am a Canadian, born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta. If I had to pigeon-hole myself into a specific field, I would say that I am an Invertebrate Larval Biologist, but my interests are fairly diverse, and professional and personal research has been rather eclectic to say the least.

I did my undergraduate degree in Zoology at the University of
Alberta, and my Masters Degree in Marine Biology at the University of North Carolina, where I worked on the reproductive biology and larval settlement of tube-dwelling polychaete worms (Hydroides dianthus). I then went on to do my Ph.D. at the University of California in Davis, where I researched mechanisms of dispersal and population structuring in a number of crab species. In the past, I have done research on jellyfish, shrimp, corals, sponges, sea slugs, and polychaete worms among others.

I have written numerous articles for online organizations including Reefs.Org and G.A.R.F., and frequent a variety of the marine aquarium list-servers and web boards online where I go by the handle of Biogeek. I have also written feature articles for several of the hobby magazines, including Aquarium.Net, Freshwater and Marine Aquarium Magazine, Marine Fish and Reef USA Annual, Practical Fishkeeping, and Tropical Fish Hobbyist. I currently write a monthly question and answer column (Invert Insights) for Tropical Fish Hobbyist, and alternate with Eric Borneman for the Invertebrate Non-column in Advanced Aquarist's Online magazine.

May 2002 Club Meeting

Featured Speaker: Wayne Shang on

"Small Polyps Stony Corals and Marine Fish"

Wayne's BIO: Wayne Shang has kept freshwater fish since childhood, and began keeping marine aquaria in the early 80's. He is currently focusing on Small Polyp Stony corals and Tridacna clams. He maintains a 650-gallon reef and a 300-gallon marine fish-only aquarium at home.

Both of his reef and fish-only aquaria were first published on Aquarium Frontiers in 1997. Since then pictures of his tanks can be seen often on the Internet and other publications such as "Aquarium Corals" by Eric Borneman, "The New Marine Aquarium" by Mike Paletta and the latest "Riffaquarien" by Daniel Knop.

In May 18th 2002 meeting, Wayne is going to talk about how to successfully maintain Small Polyp Stony Corals and to keep Marine Fish in home aquarium.

Come to join the Seabay club meeting on May 18 and spend a Saturday evening with Wayne to learn all the secret of his success or visit his web site at www.underseadiscovery.net just to get acquainted.

07/15/00 KEITH REDFIELD, Director, GoodFish Project, Ecovitality, a non-profit environmental organization.
Topic: Keith will discuss the GoodFish project, an attempt to bring certified cyanide-free fish into the trade. Cyanide fishing is highly destructive to coral reefs and is one of the main reasons cited by groups wanting to shut down the hobby.

5/20/2000 DAVID CRIPE- Monterey Bay Aquarium
"The construction of Monterey Bay Aquariums newest exhibit - SplashZone"

David has been directly responsible for the coral propagation in preparation for the upcoming exhibit "SplashZone." This exhibit has not yet been opened to the public, but David will go into great detail and will hopefully bring some slides to show and will answer all of your questions on what it takes to put this latest project together.

Dave's Bio:

I am a senior aquarist at Monterey Bay Aquarium. I have worked at MBA for three and a half years, during that time, I have worked with everything from jellies to sharks. Two of the areas that I have focused on have been larval culture and coral propagation. I am currently heading up the larval culture program at MBA and have worked with over twenty different species of fishes and invertebrates. For the last two years, I have been working on coral propagation in preparation for a new temporary exhibit called SplashZone.

The focus of SplashZone is comparing and contrasting tropical coral reefs with temperate rocky shores. While the target audience is kids, adults will be able to learn a lot and enjoy the exhibit. The tropical side of the exhibition includes a 1000+ gallon reef exhibit, 1000+ gallon shark exhibit, 900 gallon moray eel exhibit, 300 gallon giant clam exhibit and numerous other smaller exhibits. While I was involved in many of the exhibits, the reef and giant clam exhibit were the two primary exhibits that I designed and set up. The reef exhibit is designed to be a cross-section of a Indo-Pacific reef from the fore reef through the reef crest and into the lagoon. The giant clam exhibit is a focus exhibit with several species of clams along with a few corals and a few species of fish. I will talk about the design and set up of these two exhibits and touch on some of the other exhibits and cool animals that can now be found in SplashZone at Monterey Bay Aquarium.

03/18/2000 REX NIEDERMEYER
"
Power Budgeting for  Aquarium Systems: Safety and  Costs".
Speaker: Rex Niedermeyer (infamous aquarium nerd)

Abstract:  Ever stare at your monthly power bill and wonder how you could reduce it or worry about  whether you have too many pieces of aquarium equipment hooked up to your outlet and fear you might blow your fuse/breaker? This talk will demonstrate how you can estimate what your power  utilization is for your present system(s) or a possible new one and what the actual  operating costs are/will be. We will talk about ways to possibly minimize your power usage (and thus your power bill) while making sure you are hooking everything up safely.  We will also demonstrate how to measure power usage in equipment as well as show proper safety procedures for hooking them up.  This is  a topic every aquarist can benefit from whether they are saltwater or freshwater enthusiasts so invite a freshwater friend

11/20/99 STEVE TYREE, Wholesaler, author, lecturer
"Exotic SPS Species, Systems and Methods to Maintain Them and touch on how to Incorporate Live Sponges as Living Filters"

Steve's Bio:
Mr. Tyree has maintained saltwater aquaria for 20+ years. Previous accomplishments included writing articles for Aquarium Frontiers, Das Aquarium, Breeders Registry and hobbyist newsletters. He has in the past
posted numerous articles on the Internet and Compuserves Fishnet. Photographs have been published in _The Reef Aquarium_ (Delbeek and Sprung) and _The Modern Coral Reef Aquarium_ Volume 1 and Volume 2 (Nilsen and Fossa). Steve has also given presentations to Macna VII in Louisville and Macna X in Long Beach and the 1999 WMC. The company, Dynamic Ecomorphology, was started by Steve in late 1995. This company has produced 1000's of captive grown fragments for the retail market. Consultation has been provided by the company to exporters shipping corals from wild habitats. About 8 species of corals have sexually spawned in the authors captive reefs. Steve also helped start the Scleractinian Stony Coral Challenge Series being run threw the Breeder's Registry. Consultation has been provided to Ecosystems Aquarium the inventors of a new mud and macro-algae based filtration system. This consultation concerned the application of the system to support Reef Building Stony Corals. Current interest include captive scleractinian stony coral research, natural filtration methods and propagating captive grown corals and sponges via fragmentation, budding or sexual reproduction. Steve has made presentations to various local clubs and associations located throughout North America. A book about Reef Building Stony Corals and one about Sponges have been written by Steve and are self-published through DE Publishing. The company DE is also researching a new natural method to maintain coral reef organisms in captivity. This Environmental Gradient system relies on sponges and sea squirts to filter and process dissolved organics and pelagic bacteria. A book about the system will be released early in 2000.
